Chapter 15 ~ Missy

I went back to my bedroom and put my hands over my face. Why the hell had I said that? That was probably the single most horrible thing I had ever said to a person. Ugh! I was just about to return to the living room and apologize when Casper burst through my door.

“That was totally uncalled for,” he declared, his eyes blazing with anger.

“I know,” I said as I faced him. “I’m sorry.”

He closed the door, leaning one hand on it. “Why the hell would you even say something like that? You don’t know me. You sure as hell don’t know Lidia.”

I averted my eyes and fought to keep my emotions in check. “I’m sorry, Casper. I don’t know why I said that.” I glanced back at him and saw his chest rising and falling quickly, his face flushed with anger. “I didn’t mean it, I’m really sorry.”

He rolled his head on his shoulders, and I saw some of the tension fall out of them. “Why did you say that?”

“I don’t know,” I shrugged, “I was sitting on the floor, playing with Suzette, and she started talking about her mom. She was saying stuff that pissed me off, and I took that frustration out on you.”

The anger fizzled like a deflated balloon. “What did she say?” He shuffled over to the bed and sank down on the side of it as if the weight of the world had just crash-landed on his shoulders.

I took a seat beside him, sideways so I could watch him while I talked. “She was pretending that one of her dolls was Mommy and the other was her. The Mommy doll yelled at the other one and told her to go to her room and not to come out, no matter what.”

He fell back on the bed, putting his arm over his eyes. “Did she say anything else?”

“No, not really. The Mommy doll just kept telling the little girl doll to go upstairs.” My heart broke for him, and I put my hand on his leg. “I’m sorry, Casper—for what you’re going through and for what I said out there. It’s not your fault that you were married to a lunatic.”

He laughed briskly and lifted his arm. “Well, I did marry her. I kind of knew she was crazy back then, but I thought it was because she was young. I figured she’d grow out of it.”

He held his hand out to me, and I took it, thinking he wanted help sitting up, but instead he pulled me toward him, tucking me into his side. I lay completely still, my head on his chest listening to his heart thump under my ear for a few moments. He still held my hand, curled up over his heart, and inside I melted.

What was with this man? How could he make me feel so wonderful with just a few touches? It killed me to know that he made me feel this way and that he would be leaving in a few days.
